It seems that everyday a new smartphone model is making its appearance in the market. With the given features, this one is by no means a game changer; but the the long list of features and relatively low cost will definitely help it grab some attention. What are your thoughts about this new smartphone? Let us know in the comments section below.

Huawei Honor Holly: Not a bad buy, if you can’t get the Xiaomi Redmi 1S

Huawei has been in India for some time now, but has yet to make a dent with a memorable handset. Can it finally achieve that with the Honor Holly, taking on budget options like the Xiaomi Redmi 1s and the Moto E?
Specs: 5-inch IPS HD touchscreen (1280×720 pixels) | 1.3 GHz Quad-core MediaTek MT6582 processor | 1GB RAM | 16GB internal memory, microSD card up to 32GB | 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4, GPS | Dual-SIM (GSM+GSM) | 8MP rear camera with LED flash and 1080p FullHD video recording | 2MP front camera with 720p HD video recording | 2000mAh battery | Android 4.4 Kit Kat with Emotion UI
Price: Rs 6,569
Design: The Honor Holly looks and feels like “just another smartphone.” While that would have been a complaint in a more expensive phone, it’s just what you want in a budget handset. There’s nothing great, but nothing strikingly negative either. The glossy back can get dirty quickly, but that’s about it. Just like the Redmi 1s, the capacitive touch keys don’t have backlighting, so it’s difficult to use them in the dark—very annoying!
Screen: The 5-inch HD screen is big and sharp enough, and the colours don’t bleed. What’s missing is a scratch-resistant glass, which rivals Xiaomi and Motorola bring to the table. Still, it’s responsive enough and good to use.
Performance: The Honor Holly’s quad-core processor and 1GB RAM handle most things well, whether it’s multi-tasking or playing games. You won’t be able to play games like Asphalt 8 at high quality, but it’s good enough to not look bad and still be smooth.
Camera: Photos in bright daylight are fine, but as soon as the lighting gets dim, you will notice noise in the images. The camera also tends to pump up colours artificially, which can be annoying. The front camera is good enough for a few selfies though.
Storage: With 16GB of internal memory and the further option to expand it with a microSD slot, we have a winner here.
Interface: The Holly runs Android 4.4 Kit Kat, but you won’t know that with the customised Emotion UI. The functionality is the same as the Redmi, in that it tries to mimic the iPhone feel of a grid of app icons with no app drawer. However, the icon choices are garish and the whole thing seems bloated. You’re better off installing something like Nova Launcher to make your phone look like stock Android.
Battery: The battery will take you through a day, but expect it to run out quickly if you do a lot of gaming. On continuous video playback, it lasted for 7 hours.
Special Mention: Like the Xiaomi Redmi 1s and the Motorola Moto E, the Rs. 6,600 price does not include a set of headphones, so you will have to buy those separately, raising the price of this budget phone.
Verdict: The Huawei Honor Holly would have been a great phone a few months ago; but with the Redmi 1s in the market, it pales in comparison. It’s not a bad purchase by any yardstick; and it’s far easier to buy the Holly than sitting patiently through one of Xiaomi’s terrible flash sales. If you can’t get the Redmi 1s, this is a good option.

Indian smartphone market trends: Here’s what top honchos predict for 2015

When it comes to a big market forcing a crash in the priceline, India showed its might in the smartphones arena during 2014 with companies launching a plethora of affordable devices, but it also embraced the pricey new models of iconic iPhone with equal enthusiasm.
In the new year, the Indian smartphones market is expected to further consolidate its position, before emerging as the world’s second biggest market in 2016.
“Smartphones as a category is growing at a phenomenal pace. The Rs 5,000-15,000 category is exploding and we expect this trend to continue in 2015,” Nokia India Sales (Microsoft Mobiles Oy subsidiary) Managing Director Ajey Mehta told PTI.
In 2015, there could be more “intense action” in the entry-level smartphone market as more companies launch affordable handsets, aimed at upgrading feature phone users, he added.
As per research firm eMarketer, India will exceed 200 million smartphone users, topping the US as the world’s second largest smartphone market by 2016, largely on the back of growing penetration of affordable smart mobile devices.
Hemant Joshi, a Partner at Deloitte Haskins & Sells, also said that the affordable devices may remain key going ahead.
“The focus will remain same on Rs 10,000-13,000 price range for mass market. The price of smartphones and tablets is definitely coming down. Also, there might be price drop of the LTE-enabled smartphones as India is ready for a massive LTE deployment,” he said.
According to research firm IDC, over 44 million smartphones were sold in 2013. Compared to that, handset makers have already sold over 59.3 million handsets in the January-September 2014 period.
At the beginning of the year, IDC had estimated that total smartphone sales in the country would cross 80.5 million units in 2014.
“Features and specification are something which can be matched anytime. It is the design, user interface (UI) and the market operating price at which the product can be made available, which will entice the consumer to make a choice,” IDC Senior Market Analyst Client Devices Karan Thakkar said.
BlackBerry India Managing Director Sunil Lalvani is of the view that “digital” consumers are looking to do more and scout for a better connected experience both personally as well as professionally with enhanced productivity and collaboration functionalities.
“People transitioning or experiencing the initial stages of mobility will continue to adopt feature rich, popular devices, in India this in itself is a huge opportunity with in the rural areas,” he added.
Feature phones, despite falling sales volume, continue to command a lion’s share of the handset market in India. In the July-September 2014 quarter, feature phones accounted for 68 per cent of the total handset sales in India.
The smartphone market also received a huge fillip from the huge uptake of the eCommerce platform.
After a hiatus of nearly two years, US-based Motorola made a comeback to the Indian market in February this year with the launch of its Moto G. The choice of its sales platform was interesting. It adopted a completely online sales model partnering eCommerce major Flipkart.
Since then, many other handset makers have followed that model, launching handsets exclusively through online marketplaces like Snapdeal and Amazon and later introducing the device in the offline market.
The year 2014 also saw newer brands, especially of Chinese origin like Xiaomi, Oppo, OnePlus and Vivo, entering Indian market.
The most awaited launch was that of Xiaomi, often referred to as the ‘Apple of China’. The company adopted a flash sales model, putting few thousand devices on sale on Flipkart, which Indian consumers lapped up within seconds. “We plan to bring in more devices – smartphones, Mibands and MiTV to India in 2015. We have an exciting year ahead of us,” Xiaomi India Head Manu Jain said.
Globally, Xiaomi has managed to rank among the top five smartphone vendors, which includes behemoths like Samsung and Apple, within the short span of its existence.
“With smaller players offering customers the latest technology at better prices, we will see a potential erosion of the dominance of the bigger players in the market,” Spice Mobility Chief Executive Officer Prashant Bindal said.
“Indian customers are value conscious buyers and make intensive comparisons before making a choice on the handset brand, with key evaluation features being technical specifications, brand image, service support and price,” he added.
The brand pull of bigger players is no longer the key decision making factor for these young customers, he said. While Samsung continued to be the market leader with 24 per cent share in July-September quarter, it has seen its share decline as other players like Micromax and Motorola gained traction. Micromax had 20 per cent share, Lava and Karbonn (8 per cent each) and Motorola (5 five per cent) in the said quarter.
Globally, Microsoft completed its $7.2 billion buyout of Nokia’s handset division, while Lenovo finished the takeover of Motorola devices unit from Google.
To cater to the increasing number of tech enthusiasts, who are looking at doing more with their devices, a new brand from Micromax called Yu was introduced. China’s OnePlus also made its India debut to cater to this growing segment.
Another important development in the Indian market was the launch of Google’s Android One handsets. Search engine giant Google partnered Indian handset makers Micromax, Spice and Karbonn to launch handsets priced Rs 6,399 onwards.
Unveiled for the first time globally in India, Google is planning to roll out the programme to bring an affordable smartphone to the masses across markets like Indonesia, Philippines, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka in the coming months.
“With several new innovations happening on the technical front, we will see a host of new devices with evolutionary technical developments such as increased memory, faster processors, higher resolution cameras etc. This will span across various price brands thus enhancing the range of smartphones available to Indian customers,” Bindal said.
The key differentiation factor in the future for mobile handset brands will include the technology development, service support and brand reliability, he added.
A Samsung spokesperson said it expects its sales to continue to grow robustly in 2015.
Market analysts are also betting big on wearables as a category to grow fast in the coming year. While 2014 saw many handset makers like Apple, Motorola, Samsung and LG announcing new smartwatches, sports companies like Adidas also jumped on the bandwagon with their fitness bands.
“With the advent of the Internet of Things, the potential of connecting with regular items such as TV, refrigerators or washing machines which can become smart enough to talk to. The future also depends a lot on the device, as not all wearables are the same and the market trend is reflecting that health and enterprise are the two sectors seeing the most attention,” Motorola India General Manager Amit Boni said.
Industry watchers are of the view that there is still an immense potential in the Indian market that players will explore in the coming year.
“The smartphone market in India is still not mature. India has only 111 million smartphone users and the projected user base is 519 million by FY18. Hence, there is high potential in the market,” said Joshi of Deloitte Haskins & Sells.
Many brands are lined up with new features and services to attract customers like OnePlusOne, Lenovo Layered phone will give tough fight to established brands, he added.

First impressions Lava Iris Fuel 60: Battery is the only USP of this device

Lava today launched a new smartphone, as part of its Iris Fuel series, the Lava Iris Fuel 60 which is priced at Rs 8,888. The smartphone’s USP is the battery life; the company says that Fuel 60’s 4000 mAh battery can easily last a day for heavy users (who are constantly on 3G and WiFi) and even up to two days for mid-level users.
During the launch event, Lava’s Chairman and MD Hari Om Rai also revealed that the company plans to manufacture smartphones in India and will open a unit in Noida. Lava hopes to launch an India-made smartphone by March next year, said Rai.
India-made smartphones aside, the Lava Iris Fuel 60 is clearly as budget-friendly smartphone that is hoping to give users in this price range something that is inevitably lacking in these smartphones: long lasting battery. And Lava is hoping that the battery will end up being the X factor that helps consumers choose in this phone’s favour.
As far as other specs go, what we have is a pretty standard smartphone: 5-inch HD screen with IPS, 1 GB RAM, 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, 8 GB space with microSD slot and expandable to 32 GB, 10 megapixel camera and a 2 megapixel front camera.
We got a chance to look at the smartphone during the launch and here’s our first impression of the smartphone:
Design, Screen: We have to admit that this is a pretty bulky phone and the volume buttons and on/off button are on the left side of the phone. It has a familiar rectangular design, but it’s definitely on the thicker side. It’s certainly not the best looking device and feels a little heavy, but hey this is a budget smartphone.
According to Lava, the Iris Fuel 60 is made with “solder-less” manufacturing technology, where each component is connected to the PCB via connectors, unlike conventional smartphones where manual soldering is used. The company says that this will make easier for service engineers to fix the smartphone in case of any fault.
The screen is a 5-inch HD with IPS, which is standard nowadays as far as size and resolution goes, though it was hard to read anything on the screen outside in the sun. The screen however has Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection, which is definitely a good plus point to keep the device protected.
Processor, RAM, other specs: Lava Iris Fuel 60 has a Mediatek 1.3 GHz quad-core processor with 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM which can be expanded via microSD (32GB is the limit).
For most budget users, the microSD slot is a must, though it is disappointing that Lava hasn’t boosted either the processor or the RAM in this phone, something that users might have expected. Essentially the processor and RAM make this seem like a remodelled version of Iris Fuel 50, except with bigger battery.
Battery: Since this is the USP of the phone, let’s get to this. During the launch event, Lava had put up smartphones from several other companies next to their device to showcase battery usage. The devices either had a movie playing, or the camera was on, basically some heavy duty smartphone usage was going in both the rival company’s device and the Lava Iris Fuel 60.
Lava’s aim was to showcase that the Iris Fuel would lose battery much slowly than the other device and sure it appeared that the phone was still at 90%, while others were getting drained fast.
The battery in this phone is 4000 mAh and according to the company can last up to 32 hours of talk time on 2G without a need to charge the phone. However during the launch event, Lava spoke about how the battery could last one day easily with heavy usage, which included continuous 3G.
Of course, we’ll have to test the device to confirm this but if Lava delivers on these claims, it will be a massive plus point for the company. Lava also says Iris Fuel 60 is equipped with quick charge technology that restricts the charging time to 3 hours 15 minutes.
OS, Camera and other features: The smartphone runs Android 4.4.4 and Lava has promised an Android L update to the device pretty soon, though it’s not clear by when this update will be rolled out. The rear camera is 10 megapixels and the front camera is 2 megapixels. While it didn’t seem too impressive based on some early shots, we’ll have to test this one more given the lighting in the lau

nch room wasn’t too great.
Lava has also introduced gesture-based actions in this smartphone. Users can just write W or C on the smartphone’s locked screen with their finger and it will take them directly to WhatsApp (W) or Camera (C). We tried this gesture and though it takes time for the app to open, it worked fairly accurately for us.

Conclusion: This smartphone is all about the battery. Lava tried to showcase this by even including rival devices at the launch as a point of comparison. It’s also priced quite nicely for a smartphone that offers more than one-day battery. For budget users, the Iris Fuel 60 could be a good smartphone to consider.
